A History of Marijuana for Seniors

Over the last ten years, an increasing number of federal governments in the United States have opted to legalize marijuana, both for medical and recreational purposes.

As of 2019, thirty-three states and the District of Colombia have passed laws legalizing the use of marijuana in some form.

We see that this form of medication has found favor with the elderly population for many reasons.

You don’t have to smoke it:

A misconception about medicinal marijuana is that users or patients would have to smoke it to gain its benefits. It can also be ingested in the form of baked goods or treats. Other popular methods include topical application of gels and ointments.

Reduced reliance on opioids:

Additionally, prescribing medical marijuana to the elderly for multiple chronic ailments may be well suited as it prevents multiple drug interactions which may be detrimental to their health in the long run.

It eliminates the need for opioids and other drugs that pose health risks. A study conducted in Israel indicates that from a sample of 2736 patients,  18.1% had reportedly reduced their use of opioids after six months of treatment with medical marijuana.

Ever since FDA approved the use of products such as Epidiolex, which contains purified CBD, and Marinol and Syndros, we see it increasingly incorporated into clinical drugs. These drugs were found to combat seizures caused by Lennox–Gastaut syndrome as well as the treatment of anorexia in AIDS patients.

Studies conducted by the European Journal of Internal Medicine show that it was well received among senior citizens for chronic pain, sleep apnea and neuropathy.

Medical marijuana is also said to elevate a senior’s quality of life since it is known to contain antioxidants which prevent many illnesses that are commonly faced by senior citizens such as lupus, IBS, in addition to more severe conditions involving inflammation damage.

Combating Nerve Pain:

Cannabinoids yield promising results in clinical trials and are successful in blocking peripheral nerve pain. Cannabis-infused gels and ointments have proven to be effective in relieving neuropathic pain, arthritis and sore joints. Topical application of such products ensures pain relief without getting high.

Finding the right strain:

The wide array of strains caters to different kinds of illnesses and certain strains are also known to combat fatigue, help with sleep disorders, and keep the user energized. Thus, more variety of strains means that the chances of finding a strain that is tailor made to suit the needs of its users is higher as well.

Although more research is still being conducted on how to further incorporate this substance in the world of medicine, the aforementioned reasons have proven to be enough to get many senior citizens interested in this alternative pain medication.

4 Ways to use CBD Oil

CBD (cannabidiol) oil has been making waves in the medical marijuana  industry over the last decade. CBD is one of the many compounds present in the cannabis plant and is being recognized for its numerous medical benefits. CBD oil has shown to relieve cancer patients from the harmful side-effects of radiation therapy and it has also demonstrated exceptional results in alleviating conditions like epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and more. What truly makes CBD stand out amongst other cannabis compounds is its non-hallucinogenic nature– it does not get patients high. Considering it is expected to rise as the population grows and ages, there is a need for medical solutions to alleviate the symptoms, and painful outcomes, of arthritis. Medical marijuana, with its abundant benefits in the domains of pain-relief and anti-inflammation, serves as an alternative treatment for the condition. What is arthritis?
